The University for Development Studies (UDS) produced a commanding display of pace, discipline and attacking football to sweep aside Egypt’s Delta University 4 - 0 and book their place in the final of the 12th All Africa University Games in Cairo, Egypt.

On an afternoon when temperatures soared to a punishing 37 degrees Celsius, the defending champions showed that neither the desert heat nor a determined Egyptian opposition could stand between them and another shot at continental glory.

The match exploded into life from the opening whistle, with both teams playing at a furious tempo and the action swinging rapidly from one end of the pitch to the other.

Delta University, buoyed by home support and eager to halt the defending champions, refused to be intimidated. They pressed aggressively and came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 14th minute, when their striker found enough space to fire at goal, only to drag his effort wide.

That early scare appeared to sharpen UDS.

At the back, goalkeeper Edo marshalled a disciplined defensive unit comprising George Renchi, Gerald Asamoah, Jonas Agyementor and Ibrahim Mohammed. Together, they formed an almost impenetrable wall, frustrating the Egyptians and snuffing out attacks before they could develop into clear scoring opportunities.

In midfield, captain Mohammed Asigri increasingly imposed himself on proceedings, dictating the rhythm of the contest with Hamza Abukari and Mahama Adam providing the energy and steel around him.

Ahead of them, the attacking trio of Alhassan Zakaria, Ezedeen Alhassan and Akusaayela Nuhu simply refused to give the Delta defence a moment's peace.

They ran at defenders, chased loose balls, stretched the Egyptian backline and forced their opponents to expend enormous amounts of energy under the unforgiving Cairo sun.

Eventually, the pressure began to tell. Signs of fatigue crept into the Delta ranks, with their goalkeeper at one stage requiring attention after suffering a muscle cramp.

And just when the Egyptians appeared to have done enough to reach the interval on level terms, UDS struck.

Right on the stroke of half-time, the irrepressible George Renchi linked beautifully with Ezedeen on the right flank. The combination opened up the Delta defence before the ball was delivered into the middle, where Nuhu rose to meet it with a thunderous header. The goalkeeper had no answer making it UDS 1-0 Delta University.

It was the perfect way to end a fiercely contested first half. If Delta University had hoped the interval would provide some respite, those hopes lasted barely two minutes after the restart. UDS emerged from the dressing room with even greater intensity.

In the 47th minute, captain Mohammed Asigri pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area. There was no hesitation, the skipper steadied himself and unleashed a ferocious strike that flew into the net to make it 2-0.

UDS were now firmly in command. With Asigri controlling the middle of the park, UDS began moving the ball with confidence, forcing their opponents to chase shadows. Ezedeen, in particular, tormented the Delta left-back throughout the afternoon, repeatedly running at him and stretching the Egyptian defence.

Then came another moment of quality. In the 68th minute, the hardworking Alhassan Zakaria collected the ball on the left flank and drove fearlessly at the Delta defence. He skipped beyond two defenders before finishing clinically into the net to make it 3–0 to UDS.

With the final approaching and his team holding a commanding advantage, Coach Ibrahim Tanko and his assistant Samuel Kojo Whyte turned to the bench.

Ezedeen, Asigri, Edo, Hamza and Nuhu were withdrawn, making way for Ibrahim Busanga, Sauwe Sooma Haruna, Abdul Karim Raphiu, Haruna Abdul Baaki and Abdul Majeed Suglo. Far from slowing UDS down, the substitutions injected fresh energy into the contest.

In the 80th minute, the Ghanaians should have made it four. Raphiu and Sooma found themselves presented with a glorious opportunity, but a moment of miscommunication saw the two substitutes collide, allowing the chance to disappear. They would not have to wait much longer.

Five minutes later, Abdul Majeed Suglo received the ball inside the penalty area and, displaying remarkable composure, beautifully guided it beyond the goalkeeper and into the net to make it 4-0.

When the final whistle sounded in Cairo, it confirmed far more than another victory for UDS. It secured the University's place in a second successive continental final, making UDS the first university to qualify for two consecutive finals at the continental level.

It is another remarkable chapter in the institution's growing football story, coming on the back of UDS becoming the first African university to win the World University Football Championship.

And the numbers from Cairo underline just how formidable the defending champions have been. UDS have now scored nine goals in the competition while conceding just twice. And now, one match stands between UDS and another continental crown.

From a frantic opening under the scorching 37-degree Cairo heat to a ruthless second-half performance, this was a display built on defensive discipline, midfield authority, relentless running and clinical finishing.

UDS came to Cairo as champions. They are now one victory away from leaving as champions again.

Their attention now turns to the second semi-final between the University of Hertfordshire and the Federation of Guinea Universities football team, with the winner set to face UDS in the grand finale.
