GAUA-UDS Suspends Strike Following GTEC Directive

The University for Development Studies (UDS) branch of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has suspended its indefinite strike action declared on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

The decision to suspend the industrial action comes after the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) directed the restoration of office holding allowances for GAUA-UDS members serving in management and leadership positions at UDS. The allowances were withdrawn following a GTEC letter to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department dated April 28, 2025, which triggered the strike.

According to GAUA-UDS, the move by GTEC, which affected 108 of its members, was made without any prior consultation. The union expressed concern over GTEC’s unilateral decision-making, calling for more inclusive stakeholder engagement on matters that impact the welfare of university administrators.

In a statement, the GAUA-UDS leadership urged GTEC to follow due process in the handling of office holding allowances and adhere to its own earlier decisions, which had already been implemented by the management of various public universities.

The association reiterated its readiness to collaborate with GTEC to ensure that best practices in governance and administration are upheld across all higher education institutions in Ghana.
